Octavius Regional Civil Engineering (ORCE) has completed transport and accessibility improvements at Aldershot Station, Hampshire ahead of the Christmas holidays. This milestone marks the successful delivery of the first project under the Generation 5 (Gen5) Civil Engineering, Highways, and Transportation Collaborative Framework.
The 5-month project included realignment of the carriageways and footways on Station Road and Arthur Street, a new parallel crossing and an uncontrolled crossing, repaving of the Station Forecourt with a larger pedestrianised area, installation of a new two-way cycle way along Arthur Street and footways. Alongside carriageway resurfacing, footway construction, drainage works, road markings and traffic signs. The works will enhance access to the railway station and improve safety for the public travelling through the station forecourt and into the town centre.
Damian Owen, Contract Manager Capital Works at ORCE commented “The works included site clearance, carriageway resurfacing, footway construction, repaving, drainage works, street lighting, road markings and traffic signs.
The work activities were carefully planned to minimise disruption to railway passengers, residents, businesses, pedestrians, and road users. One of the projects key delivery requirements was to maintain safe pedestrian and cycle access to the busy station and the Aldershot town centre for the residents, business, and stakeholders and to maintain parking and access for all users of the station which was co-ordinated through weekly strategic planning meetings with Hampshire County and Network Rail, to ensure that road and pedestrian closures were kept to a minimum. The project was successfully completed on 23 December in collaboration with Hampshire County Council and Network Rail, despite challenging construction activities involving large areas of unknown reinforced concrete and numerous uncharted services”.
