Improving Modal Shift & Connectivity at IET Stevenage
IET-Car-Park-Stevenage-Completion-2022-12

About the project

Design/architecture & construction

This solution provided The Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), Stevenage with additional parking capacity, sustainable charging and secure bike storage and facilities to support on-going sustainable growth.

Our ‘do less’ solution incorporated sustainable features and resulted in a 30% cost saving and a more sympathetic design by installing a modular structure on and over the existing car parking facilities to the east of the building. The original design submitted for planning detailed a traditional car park split over four levels, our innovative solution achieved the required 209 spaces, achieved cost savings and improved the environment of the IET for all.

To complete this project a full range of site activities were undertaken, working collaboratively with key institute stakeholders and local authorities.

Planning approval for a single level car park was gained quickly and when working closely with stakeholders at an early stage, innovative modular solutions can provide significant savings in time and budget.

Sustainable solution

The hub is designed to link staff directly from transport to their offices with the inclusion of EV charging and secure cycle facilities whilst maintaining routes to the local national rail station.

This solution was further enhanced with drainage attenuation, a ‘green wall’ design which increased biodiversity, improvements to natural lighting to adjacent buildings, LED lighting to the parking facilities and landscaping works ensured the facility could enhance the Institute environment for employees and members alike.

This innovative modular design will allow the IET to flex their travel and transport solution with the addition/removal of a recyclable (95%) solution and a provision for further EV charging to be installed. This modular parking solution plays its small part in enabling IET to fulfil its vision to engineer a better world, by engaging and inspiring people where engineering and technology are key to solving many of the biggest challenges facing us today.
