Cycling infrastructure built to be used
A cycleway is only as good as the confidence it gives the person riding it. Octavius designs and builds cycling infrastructure that meets the highest standards of safety, comfort and connectivity.
Beyond the painted line
The standard has shifted significantly. LTN 1/20 — the government's design guidance for cycle infrastructure — sets out what genuinely good cycling infrastructure looks like: segregated from motor traffic, wide enough to use comfortably, well-surfaced, clearly signed and continuous. We design and build to that standard, because anything less does not achieve the modal shift it promises.
We deliver segregated cycleways, shared-use paths, cycle lanes, CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) junctions, cycle parking and the supporting infrastructure that makes cycling a viable everyday choice. We work in urban environments, alongside live traffic, and in the complex utility-laden streetscapes that make town-centre active travel schemes technically demanding.
Safe junctions, where cycling is most dangerous
The majority of cycling collisions happen at junctions. CYCLOPS junction design, which gives cyclists a fully protected space away from turning vehicles, represents the current best practice for keeping cyclists safe where roads cross. Octavius has delivered CYCLOPS junctions as part of major urban active travel programmes, bringing technical expertise and construction experience to the most complex element of the cycling network.
Connecting the network
A cycleway that stops at a borough boundary, a busy road or an awkward junction is not a cycleway, it is a fragment. We work with local authorities, combined authorities and National Highways to design connections that close gaps, extend networks and create routes people will actually commit to using.
