The infrastructure we build today will stand for decades. The environmental choices we make now, on carbon, materials, ecology and climate resilience, shape the world those structures stand in. Octavius takes that responsibility seriously and evidences it.
Why sustainable infrastructure matters
Transport infrastructure has historically been one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions and environmental disruption. That has to change, and Octavius is committed to being part of the solution. Not through aspiration statements, but through specific, measurable action on every project we deliver.
Net zero is a standard we are actively engineering into our work: in the materials we specify, the plant we operate, the supply chains we build and the designs we advocate for. And it is a standard we hold our supply chain to, not just ourselves.
Decarbonising construction
We measure and report our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. We set targets and track our performance against them. On site, carbon reduction comes through: lower-carbon material specification including recycled aggregates and low-carbon concrete; modern methods of construction that reduce material use and waste; logistics planning that minimises plant movements and fuel use; and electric and low-emission plant where programmes allow.
Our modular car park system is a practical demonstration of this principle: manufactured offsite with less material than equivalent in-situ construction, faster to build, generating less site waste and designed for disassembly and reuse at end of life.
Electrification - the greener railway
Every diesel train replaced by electric traction reduces carbon emissions, improves air quality and cuts noise for communities living alongside the railway. The electrification infrastructure Octavius delivers is a direct contribution to the decarbonisation of transport; one of the most carbon-intensive sectors of the economy. Cleaner rail is not only good for the climate. It is better for the people who live and work near the railway.
Biodiversity and the natural environment
We conduct biodiversity net gain assessments on our projects and design in ecological enhancements wherever the opportunity exists. We protect habitats during construction, reinstate them after and look for ways to leave the natural environment in better condition than we found it. That commitment extends to drainage design, planting, habitat creation and the management of our sites during the construction phase.
Climate-resilient design
The infrastructure we build needs to function in the climate of the future, not just today. We design for increased flood risk, higher temperatures and the changed loading patterns that come with a heavier, more intense climate. Whole-life resilience drives our design decisions.
