Exceptional value
Exceptional value is not about being the cheapest. It is about delivering more than expected, at the cost agreed, in a way that generates lasting return for customers and communities.
What value actually means
In infrastructure, value is not a number on a tender return. It is the difference between a project that costs what it should and delivers what it promised versus one that drifts, disappoints and erodes trust. True value shows up in avoided rework, early-stage design input that reduces cost downstream, supply chains that are efficient and ethical, and a customer relationship where the difficult conversations happen early enough to make a difference.
Exceptional value is what we aim to deliver on every commission. It is built into The Octavius Way.
Early contractor involvement
The greatest opportunity to add value in any project is at the beginning, when designs are still flexible, when programme assumptions can be tested, and when the right engineering decisions can prevent the wrong ones being locked in. We seek early contractor involvement wherever possible and use it to genuinely improve project economics, deliverability and outcomes.
That means identifying risk before it becomes cost. It means proposing engineering solutions that reduce programme length or material use. It means being the partner that makes the project better, before the first ground is broken.
Supply chain and innovation
We invest in our supply chain, building long-term relationships with specialist partners who share our values and our standards. That investment pays back in reliability, quality and the kind of collaborative working that drives efficiency and innovation. We are active in identifying and adopting new methods, materials and technologies that reduce cost and carbon without compromising quality.
Social value as part of the equation
Value is broader than the commercial transaction. Every project Octavius delivers generates social value — employment, skills, community investment, local supply chain spend — that extends the benefit of infrastructure investment beyond the scheme boundary. In 2025–26, we delivered over £116 million in independently assessed social value. We include this in how we measure the value we create, because our customers and their stakeholders increasingly do too.
A track record that demonstrates it
Our framework appointments with national and regional customers are awarded on best value criteria, and renewed on performance. They are the clearest external evidence that we consistently deliver what we promise. We would invite any prospective customer to speak to our existing ones.
